Why Carbon Monoxide is Dangerous
Carbon monoxide - the silent killer
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that has been dubbed "the silent killer" because it's both invisible (having no colour, smell or taste) and extremely poisonous to humans and animals. When CO leaks, it can lead very quickly to death or to chronic, long-term illnesses.

Why is carbon monoxide deadly?
A chemical mixture of oxygen and carbon, CO is created when carbon-based fuels like wood, oil, coal or gas burn without an adequate supply of air. Household appliances that can produce carbon monoxide include gas boilers, ovens, fires & water heaters and solid fuel-based stoves and boilers. Causes of such "incomplete combustion" can include insufficient ventilation, improper installation and problems resulting from a lack of proper maintenance.
When we breath normal air, our lungs transport oxygen into our bloodstream through haemoglobin, which carries the oxygen around our bodies. If carbon monoxide is breathed in, it is absorbed by haemoglobin nearly 250 times more easily than oxygen. One result is that the body can rapidly become starved of oxygen.
One of the first functions that can be affected is mental ability and any reaction that involves the the body seeking more oxygen just makes matters worse, leading rapidly to physical collapse and possibly also to death. (continues below…)
